Walking through the woods when you hear this

Imagine you are enjoying a pleasant walk in the woods on Vancouver Island.  Suddenly, the air is pierced by a terrible howl. Your blood runs cold as you try to imagine what it could be. Is that a dog? Is it a man in agony? Is it something unearthly?

Residents of Alert Bay don’t have to imagine. They are experiencing it. Several residents have reporting hearing what some believe are vocalizations from Sasquatch in the area. A young man named Mackenzie Mountain managed to get a recording on his phone. CTV, Vancouver had this video report where you can hear some of the recording.

I have been searching for the original, but have had no luck so far. If anyone has a pointer to it I’d be much obliged.

British Columbia has historically had more sightings of Bigfoot than anywhere else in Canada according to records at the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. (California has the most recorded sightings in the world.) As the news story reported, people have not only heard these calls but they have seen creatures.

Also noted in the video, Vancouver Island does not have the sort of wildlife that is normally given as probable explanations for Bigfoot sightings. There are no bears or other such creatures on the island. It’s also remarkable that something could manage to stay hidden in such a small place. Vancouver Island is less than 3 miles across. This gives some weight to the idea that it could be some sort of inter-dimensional being.

Bigfoot researchers have taken an interest in the sightings and CTV had a follow up story with John Bindernagel who traveled to the area to get his own recordings. (See his web site. We have the Bigfoot cast he shows on his home page in our Museum!) You might be interested in his latest book, The Discovery of the Sasquatch.

Will this lead us closer to answers about Bigfoot? I’m always hopeful. As always, we wait and watch to see. Have you had a Bigfoot encounter? Tell us!

Funny ghost poster.
Poster in the London Underground takes a no-nonsense view of ghosts. Screen readers refer to this text.

I admit, I’m fond of the British. They generally have an admirable calm and dignity that is worth imitating. Submitted for your perusal is this poster, found in a London Underground, addressing the presence of spirits. It’s obviously a joke—and a good one—but reports of ghosts in the tube system are commonplace.

This Daily Star article describes encounters with “a girl with ‘coal-black pits for eye sockets’” that first emerged in the 1980s, and is still making appearances. Other regular encounters include the mad ghost of Sarah Whitehead, also known as the Black Nun, who haunts the Bank Station.

Of course, London is not the only place with haunted trains. According to this Silicon India News article there are ghosts spotted in stations all over the world. Here are a few doozies:

  • Caobao Road Subway Station in Shanghai, China, has frequent break downs that seem to get better once the trains are free of the station. One story suggests that a man was dragged onto the tracks by a spirit!
  • Panteones Metro Station in Mexico City—the name literally means “Graveyards”— was built near two old cemeteries.  Workers hear mysterious knocks on the walls and have seen indistinct, shadowy shapes moving around. Screams are sometimes heard along the tracks.
  • Guards at Waterfront Station in Canada have seen a number of bizarre reflections of past passengers. One saw a 1920’s flapper complete with music from the era that vanished as approached.
  • Connolly Station in Ireland was badly damaged during a 1941 bombing attack. A soldier in grey has been seen roaming the platform and a guard watching the security camera saw two figures in military gear who disappeared when he investigated.

Why do ghosts return to these subways? Do they think of them as special places? They are certainly places where people have spent a lot of time. When I die I hope I don’t find myself trapped in someplace that was part of my day-to-day, mundane world. Imagine spending the afterlife sitting at that red light, or trapped behind a keyboard?

We’re interested in your weird travel encounters. We’ll share the interesting ones here.

Robber disgraces rodents everywhere

Yesterday, we talked about the heroic bomb-sniffing rats of Cambodia and how rats are being used as other kinds of service animals. We also talked about how some of these unconventional service animals are struggling with acceptance because some people find them to be alarming.

Today we feature a human criminal who is adding to that fear by robbing a store dressed as a mouse.

https://youtu.be/Wc7dbK-uB2E

Canadian police released this video of a man robbing a shop dressed as a giant mouse. You can see details in this Sky News article. Not only is this man doing harm to society, he is harming the image of innocent animals and continuing to drive the wedge deeper between people and rodents of all kind.

If you must disguise yourself for a robbery, wear the mask of a politician. At least there the mistrust will do us good.

MYSTERY FEET KEEP WASHING UP IN VANCOUVER!

What a strange and horrifying find for a little boy! He stumbled upon a severed foot with the shoe still on it the other day while playing near his home in Canada.

CNN writes:

Authorities have found what appears to be a severed human foot this week, the 11th found in waterways in British Columbia in the past four years.

The discovery of another foot, this one still stuck in a running shoe, adds to the mystery that has confounded Canadians for years.

A boy found the foot and leg bone Tuesday near a marina in an inlet called False Creek, Vancouver Police said.

Foul play is not suspected, authorities told Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Authorities believe that because the remains did not have any evidence of trauma, the CBC reported.

The British Columbia Coroners Service has in the past said it was conducting DNA profile tests to determine the identities of the remains.

Some of the feet have been identified through DNA, but the reason they turn up where they do is still unknown in most cases, the CBC said.
