Our haunted hotel neighbor

A few blocks west of the Museum of the Weird lies a beautiful, old hotel called the Driskill. It was built in 1885 by cattle baron Colonel Jesse Driskill and designed to be the finest hotel this side of the Mississippi in its day. The hotel has been fully restored to its original glory and is one of those places where time disappears once you enter. It’s also very haunted.

Celebrities Annie Lennox and Johnette Napolitano both are reported to have had experiences in the hotel. Napolitano was inspired by hers to write the song Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man (see the video).

The ghost of a suicide bride haunts the corridors and is occasionally encountered by guests.

The ghost of a young girl, daughter of a U.S. Senator, who was killed after a fall down a marble staircase, is said to bounce a ball and disturb the doors and fixtures in the upstairs bathroom.

Some have reported a strange disturbance in their room. The bathroom mirrors are fogged as though someone had a shower and mysterious scribbling is found on the pad between the beds. The first occurance was discovered when the couple returned to their room one afternoon. The second was discovered when the people awoke that morning!

Staff in the hotel have told me about touches and pinches they have received working in parts of the building, especially on the top floor. In some cases it seems that the spirits will haze the new people a little by giving them some special attention until they show respect.

Several years ago, a colleague and I had our own encounters. We took a digital camera to the 5th floor to take pictures around the legendary room 525. As we stepped down from the elevators into the old part of the hotel my camera ran out of battery. I had thought they were good, but apparently not. We satisfied ourselves with simply walking around and taking the place in. Later, on the street, I activated the camera again to see if it had enough juice to pull the motorized lens back in so I could put it away. It came up with full charge and worked fine for several hours. It just didn’t want to work on that floor.

My colleague reported strolling around on that hallway and hearing a woman’s voice singing what sounded like an old tune in the vicinity of 525. There was work being done on the rooms and they appeared to be unoccupied at the time. He said it sounded “old” to him, not like modern singing, and that I would know what he meant if I’d heard it.  He was with two other people who heard the same thing and could not determine a source for the singing.

LBJ watches the 1964 election results from his suite at the Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas.

The Driskill is a delightful place. It’s housed many wealthy and powerful people. During the time that the Texas State Capitol was built, the legislature held meetings at the Driskill. LBJ watched his election results there. Many other politicians have made it their center while in Austin.

The next time you are by the Museum, take some time to walk up the street and visit our neighbor. You are guaranteed an experience, though it may not necessarily be a ghostly one. Of course, if you do encounter something otherworldy, please let us know!

Meet the Woman Who Has Had More Than One Thousand Near Death Out of Body Experiences!

Beverly Gilmour of Lancashire claims to have had over one thousand out of body experiences that have all almost led her to her death.

out-of-body

Beverly claims it all started back in 1987, and since then, has had three experiences a month, like clockwork.

“I have an out of body experience and my heart stops.” Claims Ms Gilmour. “Most people who go through an NDE – a near death experience – have them on the operating table or in a moment of trauma like a car accident. Most only have one such experience in a lifetime. But I have been having three a month since 1987. I was terrified at first and a friend suggested it was near death experience.”

She is registered as disabled, and is watched over by her two sons.

The real question is, do the experiences get boring when they happen that excessively?

Skunkape/Bigfoot Found Jumping into Gator Infested Waters

Outside of Tampla Florida, a Bigfoot hunter & enthusiast named Matt M. captured a video while canoeing in the swamps of Tampla, Florida.

What was thought to be a bear, has been analyzed further to be proven not to be. No bear has arms that lanky and long, and how it walks seems unnatural for a bear, even a weirdo one.

Matt saw this thing in the woods and smartly started filming this unknown creature as it dove into Gator infested waters, probably to show all the Gators why he’s a mythological creature and they’re not.

Check out the video below (which has been stabilized) and decide for yourself!

The “Jewish Indiana Jones” is Searching for The Lost Ark.

What if Seinfeld was casted instead of Harrison Ford? What would that version of Indiana Jones be like? Well now you can get a bit of an idea, because there’s a real life, self proclaimed, “Jewish Indiana Jones” searching for the real Lost Ark of the Covenant.

Harry Moskoff is a filmmaker and researcher who has spent the last 25 years of his life searching for the real Lost Ark. In a quote from Breaking Israel News, he has been searching for the exact location of the Ark, where the Jewish Temple once stood. He believes through the many scriptures describing the Ark, this will be where the Ark is located, and believes he is much closer than ever to finding it.

His current theory states through biblical evidence (and based off of the 1982 book, “In the Shadow of the Temple”), that the Ark is located in a secret chamber built directly underneath the Holy of Holies Temple, where King Solomon built the room before the construction of the temple.

Some may believe Moskoff to be a joke (and not a funny Seinfeld joke), but Moskoff is the closest anyone has ever come to finding the Ark, and his theories are backed by many archeologist.

Personally, I would have loved to see what kind of witty banter could have existed between Seinfeld and Shortround, but I’ll stand by until Harry succeeds at finding the Ark.

The Most Terrifying Creature Ever “Slender Man” Found in Staffordshire

If you haven’t heard of Slender Man yet, you just enjoyed your last good night’s sleep. Slender Man is an eight foot skinny ghost like creature in a suit. His face is covered in a white sheet, giving him no facial features (until he shows his razor sharp teeth) and a ghost like presence.

In the mythology of Slender Man, when he is stalking you, he hangs back far in the woods until he is noticed. Once noticed, the victim feels an overwhelming feeling of a numb like paralyzation of the mind and body. This state remains until Slenderman eventually catches up to you, pins you down, shows his giant razor sharp teeth, and well, you can probably piece together the rest.

He has been a myth that’s been made into movies, video games, stories, and more, but now, he’s real, and has been spotted in Cannock Chase.

Several sleepless, terrified residents of Cannock Chase have claimed to have seen the long, Jack Skellington like creature creepin’ around their homes.

One resident, Lee (28), who investigated the strange accusations of the sightings, had the following to say:

“One theory is that this has nothing to do with the supernatural and eye-witnesses are experiencing sleep paralysis, where individuals’ eyes are open but they are still in a state of sleep, and therefore unable to move.

“There are reports of Slender Men seemingly pinning victims down, as if sitting on their chest. That could well be down to sleep paralysis.”

“It appeared to rise out of the trees and hover over the path around 100m (328ft) in front of me. It was very dark, but I could see it clearly because of the lights coming from Rugeley.

“It was also a pretty clear night. If I were to compare it to anything, I would say it looked like a stereotypical Victorian gentleman, long, black overcoat with a homburg hat.

“I know this was no flying human because it had blood red eyes that shone in the night sky.

“It also had a mouth full of teeth that seemed to look like razors. Whatever it was, it stopped hovering and descended back into the trees. Needless to say, I did not investigate any further.”

No further investigations have been done, and the Slender Man very much may still be out there in the woods as the residents of Cannock Chase never sleep again.

Hipster Bigfoot Found in Brooklyn?

Seems like a PBR drinking, fixed gear bicycle riding Bigfoot was found doing yoga… I mean walking around in Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

Existence-of-Bigfoot-Allegedly-Proved-by-Bulled-Proof-DNA-Study-2 copy

The video was shot Tuesday morning in Prospect Park by a hot toddy drinking local mustache aficionado probably filming a short film when all of a sudden a large, dark figure walked in the back of his frame and probably ruining the man’s perfect intro shot.

The video was met with great skepticism upon viewing, and has been widely decided to be a hoax. All of Brooklyn scoffed upon viewing and went back to their home micro brew.

Watch the video and decide for yourself whether this is a PBR slinging Bigfoot, or large elaborate hipster hoax.

WIZARD WORLD COMIC CON TODAY… MYSTERY ANNOUNCEMENT!

MOTW-2013-11-23-Wizard_World_1

Having just returned from the first two-week long vacation I’ve had in a while, I’m feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and looking forward to the exciting news I’m going to announce today at Wizard World Comic Con!

I and my fellow Museum of the Weird sideshow performers Blockhead Benny and Obi-Juan Martinez will be in attendance hosting a special panel at 5:00pm today in Exhibition Hall F. I’ll be showing off artifacts from the Museum’s collection, talking about the Minnesota Iceman, and signing copies of my new Museum of the Weird comic!

And I’ve got an electrifying announcement for all fans of science fiction, fantasy and horror (or as I like to call it, “sfanthor,” a term I coined with my short entries into this year’s Fantastic Fest Film Festival). If you live in the Austin area and you’re a fan of these film genres, you’re going to want to be there!

Whether you’ve already got your wristbands or are planning on going (or you’re just now hearing about it), Wizard World is a ton of fun for fans of not only comics but practically everything from our pop culture. Everyone should go at least once if you’ve never been, and this year’s convention seems to be the one to attend. Just look at who’ll be there!

Stan Lee, Bruce Campbell AND Captain Kirk under one roof? My brain’s gonna explode!

THE AUSTINOT INTERVIEWS MUSEUM OF THE WEIRD’S STEVE BUSTI

Austinot.com's Dave Thomas (left) with Museum of the Weird owner Steve Busti
Austinot.com’s Dave Thomas (left) with Museum of the Weird owner Steve Busti

We had a great article written about us by David Thomas today for the popular Austin blog austinot.com. If you’re not familiar with the Museum of the Weird, this is a great preview of some of the things you might find here!

Austin is weird, right? It’s how we’ve branded the city.

We’ve all seen the tie-dye shirts, but how weird is Austin really? Is it mermaid mummy weird? Is it shrunken head weird? The Museum of the Weird on 6th St. is that weird.

The Iceman Cometh

When Steve Busti was just a young lad, he went with his aunt to a K-Mart. In the parking lot was a man with a truck, taking money from a line of people as they peeked into the back of it.

Steve’s aunt paid the man and lifted Steve up so he could see into the back of the truck. He came face to face with the world famous Minnesota Iceman – an ape-man frozen in ice, of controversial origin, which has attracted the attention of the FBI, Smithsonian Museum, U.S. Customs and Vice President Walter Mondale. The world famous moniker is not hype. The Iceman has attracted the attention of international paleontologists and scientists.

First impressions are important. If Steve Busti had never met the Iceman, I may not be writing this story. “If I hadn’t seen the Iceman at such a young age, I’d probably be an accountant or lawyer or something and there would be no Museum of the Weird,” Steve said with a grin. It’s interesting how things work out.

Steve and his wife opened Lucky Lizard Curios and Gifts in 2005. “It’s a reflection of both our personalities,” he informed me. “She has locally made jewelry and I have my oddities.”

The museum grew from there. Steve took advantage of the extra space in the back of the store and above it, and he’s slowly amassed an impressive collection over the last eight years, with his most prized possession being the Iceman. Steve’s acquisition of the Iceman has gained the attention of national media outlets like The Huffington Post.

INSECTS BY STORM

180294Several nights ago, my coworker Teebo and I were prepared for a busy night at the Museum of the Weird, when a freak electrical storm decided to strike Austin. The storm brought little rain, but remained hunkered over the central downtown area for hours where its spectacular displays of sideways lightning illuminated the skyline until the wee hours of dawn. At approximately 11pm is when the bugs began to swarm. Flying tree roaches, to be exact, demurely labeled in the South as “Palmetto Bugs.”

I returned from conducting one of the final tours of the night to find Teebo poised with the broom over one arm like she was waiting for the zombie hordes to stagger in through the front door.

Wild-eyed she exclaimed, “You missed it!”

“Missed what?” I asked, frozen in place.

“The roaches! Hundreds of them! They were coming in the door from the street in a flood,” she proclaimed. “See! There’s another one!”

Teebo swung the broom with killer efficiency, bringing about the deaths of several more flying tree roaches as I screamed like a little girl (not my finest moment).

After the adrenaline began to subside and the swarms lessened to a few dazed and confused bugs staggering as drunkenly through the door as the late-night patrons, I started to think about the cause of the sudden infestation.

There is a scientific connection between insects and electrical fields. Ants swarm around electrical lines and have been found to play house in the back of television sets, lamp sockets, and computers. I personally lost an expensive Mac in college when ants decided to have a Burning Man party in the tower. There are several theories as to why insects are attracted by the electrical frequencies put out by our human technology. Perhaps these frequencies are more attuned to the white noise of their own insect chatter and, thus, they are drawn to it, believing it to be the source of a larger hive?

One study has shown that bees use a flower’s electrical field to locate the pollen and vice versa. Flowers emit an electrical frequency designed to assist an insect’s internal navigation system. The voltage changes to signify when the nectar or pollen levels are low. This research was conducted by a team from the University of Bristol, which studied almost 200 bees collecting pollen from petunias.
In an article in the UK Daily Mail, PhD student Dominic Clark, from the University of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences, said, “Flowers are like giant advertising billboards for bees. We have known for a long time that flowers use colour and smell to advertise to their pollinators. More recently though, it is being discovered that flowers take advantage of more and more of their pollinators’ senses to send their messages.”

It has also been proven that a bee’s buzz creates an electric current which allows them to communicate with other bees. An article in the Huffington Post quotes, “Tests show that the electric fields, which can be quite strong, deflect the bees’ antennae, which, in turn, provide signals to the brain through specialized organs at their bases.”

How do electrical fields from pollinating flowers relate to the swarming palmetto bugs? Massive, highly charged electrical storms emit frequencies far beyond an insect’s own natural frequencies or those of manmade electrical structures, charging the air and driving insects into frenzies of unnatural behavior. What we witnessed was an example of the bizarre behavior that freak electrical storms can cause in the bug world.

Of course, this is just my personal theory based on what I’ve read and observed. They could have been fleeing a psychotic ally cat, for all I know. If it ever happens again, however, Teebo and I are prepared. We’ll just whip out one of the giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches we keep to feed Torgo, the 30-pound Nile Monitor Lizard upstairs, and show these Texas bugs what a real roach looks like.
