WILL NEXT SATURDAY BE THE END OF THE WORLD?

Harold Camping (inset) is the progenitor of the most recent doomsday theory.

Next Saturday will be the end of the world… that is, if you believe Harold Camping and his devoted group of Christian followers.  They believe the Rapture, as prophesied in the Bible, will take place on May 21, 2001.

Spring is finally here — but apparently, the apocalypse will be fast on its trail. That’s the word from a slight but outspoken group of spiritual devotees who believe that the world as we know it is coming to an end.

Maybe you’ve already encountered the literature: pamphlets, subway ads, billboards on the side of the highway. “Judgment Day is coming” reads one billboard, which features a man praying in silhouette against a sunset backdrop. These are the works of a peculiar breed of Christian activists who’ve taken to the road to preach their belief in the fast-approaching End of Days. The self-appointed harbingers are not tied to any particular church — they claim organized religion has been corrupted by the devil — but rather to Internet- and radio-based ministries. And their lone mission is to tell anyone and everyone that the end of days is May 21. That’s when, they insist, God’s true believers will be lifted into heaven and saved, during a biblical event widely referred to as the Rapture.

The finer points of Christian eschatology have long been the subject of dispute (not to mention the inspiration for movies and books, like the blockbuster “Left Behind” series). Though mainstream churches reject the the notion that doomsday can be predicted by any man, fringe scholars continue to work feverishly pinpointing the moment of the final, divine revelation. And one such man — 89-year-old radio host Harold Camping — has been at the game for decades.

In the early ’90s, Camping published a book titled “1994?,” which claimed judgment day would arrive in September of that year. When confronted with such a staggering anticlimax — the world, after all, kept on spinning — Camping chose not to be discouraged, but to learn from his mistakes. (He hadn’t considered the Book of Jeremiah, he says.) A civil engineer by trade, Camping went back to the drawing board and continued to crunch the numbers, before arriving at the adamant determination that Rapture would come on May 21, 2011. He began to spread the word through his broadcasting network, Family Radio, in 2009, and quickly built up a fervid following.

But what, exactly, is his argument? We’ve compiled an explainer below with all the information you’ll need to prepare for May 21.

What happens during and after the Rapture?

In a nutshell: The worthy dead will first rise up to heaven, followed shortly thereafter by about 200 million faithful followers saved by God. Those left behind will endure several months of ghastly torment. And what remains of our fair Earth will swiftly careen toward its ultimate destruction — which will occur in October.

According to one advocate, Brian Haubert, who was interviewed for a recent article published by NPR:

On May 21, “starting in the Pacific Rim at around the 6 p.m. local time hour, in each time zone, there will be a great earthquake, such as has never been in the history of the Earth,” he says. The true Christian believers — he hopes he’s one of them — will be “raptured”: They’ll fly upward to heaven. And for the rest?

“It’s just the horror of horror stories,” he says, “and on top of all that, there’s no more salvation at that point. And then the Bible says it will be 153 days later that the entire universe and planet Earth will be destroyed forever.”

Why does Camping believe the end is nigh?

Camping and his affiliates present at least three explanations — what he refers to as “infallible, absolute proofs” — for May 21 being the day.

  • It’s the anniversary of Noah’s Flood: A great deal of effort has been made by biblical literalists over the years to identify the exact chronology of the events dictated in the Old Testament. Some scholars, including Camping, adhere to the theory that the Biblical Flood took place on May 21 in the year 4,990 B.C. Then, in Genesis, God told Noah seven days before the Flood to warn people of the impending cataclysm. And Camping posits that this figure, seven days, holds greater significance than meets the eye. According to the biblical passage 2 Peter 3:8, “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” Therefore, argues Camping, Rapture should occur 7,000 years after the Flood. And the 7,000th anniversary of the biblical deluge, by his math, falls on May 21, 2011.
  • It’s the anniversary of Creation … sort of: Another piece of evidence — explained by Family Radio affiliate eBibleFellowship — suggests that the world began in 11,013 B.C., and its 13,000th anniversary came and went in 1988. During that year, apparently on May 21, the end of the “church age” came to pass. Then, a 23-year time of “tribulation” began, during which Satan claimed dominion over all the world’s churches. (Camping also supports this notion. He claims that the number “23” — far from just being apoorly received Jim Carrey film — also represents “destruction” in biblical symbology.) The end of this particular period of cosmological strife is said to fall on May 21, 2011.
  • Divine Numerology: This elaborate line of reasoning first argues that Jesus Christ was killed on April 1 in the year 33 A.D. Using that date, the crucifixion would have occurred exactly 1,978 years and 51 days — or 722,500 days — before May 21, 2011. It turns out that 722,500 is also the product of an equation — (5 x 10 x 17)^2 — that includes three different numbers of significance, according to Camping. Five means “atonement.” Ten indicates “completeness.”And 17 signifies “heaven.” Thus: Armageddon.

RARE CONJOINED TWINS WHO SHARE A SINGLE BODY BORN

A woman has given birth to a baby girl with two heads in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

The conjoined twins, who share a single body, two arms and two legs, were born by Caesarean section last week, according to officials.

A woman has given birth to a baby girl with two heads in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

The conjoined twins, who share a single body, two arms and two legs, were born by Caesarean section last week, according to officials.

The sisters are believed to suffer from a condition known as dicephalic parapagus – an extremely unusual form of twin conjoinment where only a single body develops.

Rare condition: The two-head conjoined twin girls were born in a hospital in Suining city in southwest China's Sichuan province last week

Because they share the same body, it is not possible to separate dicephalic parapagus conjoined twins.

The birth of dicephalic parapagus conjoined twins – who develop after a fertilized egg cell fails to divide fully – is extremely rare, with most cases occurring in southwest Asia and Africa.

Intensive care: The twins will require around-the-clock attention
Sister act: Conjoined twins are extremely rare, occurring once in 100,000 births, while the dicephalic parapagus form of the condition is almost unheard of

HAUNTED ‘AMERICAN IDOL’ MANSION FOR SALE

Season 10’s “American Idol” house is not some Victorian-era mansion or even an abandoned mid-century modern from the 1960s, yet the contestants on Fox’s hit show claim that the place is indeed haunted.

Built in 2008 the home now abandoned by the singers, has hit the Beverly Glen real estate market with a listing price of $12,000,000.

First reported by celebrity site TMZ, reports of paranormal activity began with “bizarre flickering lights” followed by an infestation of spiders. A few of the reality show stars told OK! Magazine that they saw “a hand falling down from the ceiling.” (They also admit to watching a horror movie at the time.)

But apparently the last straw was when several of the cast-mates “claim they watched a bed sheet suddenly take on a life of its own and float down an empty hallway.”

That and the roof leaked a little bit during a torrential Los Angeles rain storm.

IS THIS ACTUAL FOOTAGE OF A LIVING ALIEN GREY?

This video, first reported by Michael Cohen of allnewsweb.com, claims to show archival secret footage of an alien Grey. Here’s the text that accompanied the video:

Alien footage leaked of Roswell UFO crash survivor

Michael Cohen m.cohen@allnewsweb.com

Old footage showing a “grey” type alien who might have been a survivor of the Roswell UFO crash that occurred over sixty years ago in New Mexico has been released onto the Internet. The black and white clip is allegedly part of a much larger collection of footage that was filmed by government agents working on top secret UFO and alien matters between the years 1942 and 1969. Only a fraction of the much longer 180 minute archive of footage has been released thus so far.

The people or person who leaked the footage alleges to have done so anonymously as a precaution to ensure their safety. The alien seen in the video is clearly humanoid and is said to originate from the nearby Zeta Reticuli star system. As can be seen he is wearing the tight fitting space suit so commonly described by those who have experienced close encounters with aliens

It is this publication’s believe that this footage is genuine and this is yet another deliberate leak attesting to government knowledge on the UFO issue on the road to to an official announcement of knowledge of alien visitors to Earth.

WAS STAR TREK’S “ENTERPRISE” HOVERING OVER ROYAL WEDDING?

Wow, I swear I could have seen this episode where Kirk, Spock and McCoy have to travel back in time to avert a royal wedding disaster, making sure the perfect wedding dress arrives just in the nick of time to prevent Kate Middleton from having a bridezilla meltdown in front of millions, and thus changing the entire course of human history…

LONDON: Looks like Prince William and fiancee Kate Middleton will have some unexpected guests at their wedding. A tourist has reportedly filmed a UFO hovering over Westminster Abbey, the venue for Friday’s royal wedding.

The two-and-a half-minute video footage shows a shimmering white object in a cloudless blue sky near Big Ben. It seems to move and shift shape, but to have three sections, like the starship USS Enterprise from TV’s Star Trek.

“First we thought it was a parachute but it was way too high up,” the Sun quoted the tourist as posting it on the Internet. “It changed shape but stayed there for at least 30 minutes. Then I lost sight of it,” the tourist added.

Then again, maybe Kirk and the boys were just crashing the royal wedding, 23rd Century-style.  All joking aside, apparently it’s not unusual for UFOs to show up at big events like the royal wedding, in fact it was predicted by a former Air Force officer just days before the event:

The upcoming royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to be viewed by more than a billion people worldwide — and possibly a few extraterrestrials, according to at least one former military officer.

George Filer, a retired Air Force major, runs the National UFO Center and says it’s common to see UFOs around important events.

“The craft seem to have an interest in anything important,” Filer told AOL News. “They’ve been sighted recently over Libya and near the Japanese tsunami.”

Filer says his center averages more than 1,000 sightings a month, and he expects to get a few UFO reports from the area surrounding Westminster Abbey, the site of the April 29 wedding.

There are two reasons behind Filer’s prediction: In the last few weeks, he’s been getting reports from British Royal Air Force pilots who reported seeing UFOs over the English Channel, and, more importantly, he says the royal family is very interested in the UFO phenomenon.

Filer knows this personally because he once had a conversation about UFOs with William’s grandfather, Prince Philip.

“It was around 1961 or ’62, when I was a navigator in a tanker,” Filer said. “He met with a group of us after a dinner because he wanted to talk about UFOs. He told us that the RAF had stopped sending fighters after UFOs because some of them didn’t come back.

“They decided to send tankers, which were nearly as fast as the fighters but could hold 15 hours of fuel, compared to two for the fighters.”

Filer says the prince also revealed that his interest in UFOs was more than just concerns of national security — it was personal.

“I asked him why he was so interested in UFOs and he explained that his uncle, the Earl Mountbatten, had seen them up close,” Filer said.

Even though the meeting took place during the Cold War, Filer discounts the underlying possibility that the UFOs seen during the period were actually Soviet craft.

“That was always a possibility, but it seemed unlikely since these craft were bigger than expected — it’s like an aircraft carrier in space,” he said. “However, the Soviets did try to penetrate the airspace of the United Kingdom and the United States quite regularly.”

Filer’s account of Prince Philip’s UFO interest gets support from Colin Andrews, a renowned investigator of crop circles in Britain during the 1980s. Crop circles — a term coined by Andrews — are mysterious patterns, created by the flattening of crops, that many people believe have been created by extraterrestrials.

“The queen even put a book of mine about the subject, called ‘Circular Evidence,’ on her official summer reading list, the first paranormal book ever included,” Andrews told AOL News. “Prince Philip and the queen are particularly interested in the subject. And their interest seems to be based on personal experiences.”

Andrews says the queen even sent him a letter confirming that very fact, despite official denials from the British government and the royal family.

“I have numerous documents attesting to that, even though Nick Pope, the head of the UFO project of the Ministry of Defense, publicly stated the queen and the government had no official interest in UFOs,” Andrews said. “I believe he was under instruction to make that statement and he later confirmed that during a live interview with the BBC.”

Andrews posted the queen’s letter on his website but was asked to remove it because it was a “personal” correspondence not meant for public consumption.

“The royal family has not just an interest in UFOs and crop circles, but a great interest,” Andrews added. “And that includes Prince Charles and the late Princess Di.

“As for Prince William, I’d be surprised if he wasn’t interested as well.”
